If you haven't played any MOBA it will be hard to get in shape with DoTA, yet this game is one of the best and especially in terms of non-annoyingness and always interesting.
I'd recommend to look on youtube what it is all about as well as reading something over the internet (something like DoTA2 wiki or so), after that it will be easier for you to consider.
As for the updates - some updates aren't announced and it is hard to guess what it was all about, sometimes I can see changes and then I'll note it down over here, but sometimes I don't and so it means that who knows what this update was all about? Most likely some security/stability/code refining and so on.
